An Icy World

Michigan winters are notorious for being long, cold, and sometimes dangerous. This winter has been confusing, to say the least. We had a very mild December, it was actually even warm. The first half of January was wet and rainy and then all of a sudden we got several inches of snow over night. Since that first snowfall we have been back and forth with heavy snowfall, freezing wind and mild temperatures, sunny days, and rain. A few weeks ago we had record breaking cold and for about a week the temperature didn't even get above zero degrees, couple that with even colder wind chills and just about everything came to standstill. Currently Michigan is dealing with rain during the day that turns into ice at night and we have a snowfall on the way thanks to our Great Lakes and this lovely thing called Lake Effect snow. Winters like this are brutal. It isn't fun and I absolutely hate being cold. I like being outside and when the weather is like this that just isn't a feasible option. Going anywhere is miserable because of blowing wind, freezing cold, and piles of snow are everywhere.
I have been cooped up in my house for what seems like forever. I leave to go to work and then come home. Driving a little car in bad weather is scary and sometimes just not possible so I stay home as much as I can. There have been days of clear roads, thank goodness, but that doesn't mean it's not absolutely frigid outside.
But, what the winter lacks in comfort and safety it partially makes up for in beauty. Nothing is quite so picturesque as ice glazed trees shining in the sun or freshly fallen snow still yet undisturbed. While I quite often dream of living somewhere warmer with much shorter, milder winters when I take in the beauty that winter has to offer I remember why so many people romanticize the season. It is glorious...until you have to shovel your car out of the driveway or get slush splashed on you while walking through a parking lot. For the right people winter has a lot to offer. For me it offers beauty and the chance to capture it with my camera.
Today I thought I'd share some pictures showcasing some of that wintery beauty, pictures I've taken over the past few weeks. And while I wait for winter to loose it's grip on Michigan I'll be dreaming of spring and fresh flowers.
Swipe through to see some pictures from this winter's last ice storm and a snapshot of one of my dogs, Cooper!
